Short-Term vs. Long-Term Radon Testing: Which Do You Need?
Radon testing comes in two broad categories, and the distinction is not a minor technical detail. Short-term and long-term tests answer genuinely different questions, and choosing the wrong one for your situation can leave you with a number that does not tell you what you need to know.
The Basic Difference
A short-term test runs from two to 90 days, though most run two to seven. It produces a snapshot: what the radon concentration was in your home during that specific window.
A long-term test runs more than 90 days, commonly three months to a full year. It produces an average across the entire period, smoothing out day-to-day and seasonal variation.
Neither is more accurate in a technical sense. Both measure real radon. The difference is what the resulting number represents.
Why Radon Levels Move So Much
Understanding the choice requires understanding that indoor radon is not a fixed property of a house. It fluctuates constantly, sometimes dramatically.
Daily cycles. Levels usually peak overnight and in early morning, when the house is closed and temperature differential between indoors and soil is greatest.
Barometric pressure. Falling pressure ahead of a storm reduces the pressure pushing down on soil, letting more soil gas escape upward into the home. Central New York’s changeable weather makes this a real factor.
Wind. Wind creates pressure differentials across a structure that can either draw soil gas in or push it away, depending on direction and the home’s configuration.
Season. This is the big one in our climate. Winter levels typically run considerably higher than summer levels. Warm indoor air rises and escapes through the upper portion of the house, creating negative pressure at the foundation that actively pulls soil gas in — the stack effect. Add frozen or snow-covered ground, which caps the soil and forces gas toward the warm, depressurized structure sitting on it, and January readings can substantially exceed July readings in the very same house.
Occupant behavior. Running a dryer, a range hood, or a bathroom fan depressurizes the home slightly and can pull in more soil gas.
A short-term test captures a slice of all this variation. A long-term test averages across it.
When Short-Term Testing Is the Right Choice
Real estate transactions. This is the dominant use case, and it is essentially non-negotiable — nobody can wait 90 days for results during a 10-day inspection contingency. Real estate radon testing is short-term by necessity, which is exactly why protocol matters so much: closed-house conditions, correct placement, and a device that logs data all exist to make a brief window as representative as possible.
Initial screening. If you have never tested, a short-term test tells you quickly whether you are in the clear or have a problem. A result of 0.9 pCi/L or 14 pCi/L is decisive either way.
Post-mitigation verification. After a system is installed, a short-term test confirms it worked. You want that answer in days, not months.
After major renovations. Finishing a basement, replacing HVAC, or foundation work can change how a home interacts with soil gas. A short-term test tells you promptly whether something shifted.
When Long-Term Testing Is Better
Understanding your actual exposure. Health risk from radon comes from cumulative exposure over years. A year-long detector measures something much closer to what you are actually breathing than a 48-hour snapshot.
Borderline short-term results. If a short-term test returned 3.6 or 4.4 pCi/L, you are close enough to the action level that seasonal timing may have decided which side of it you landed on. A long-term test resolves the ambiguity.
Summer testing in Central New York. A July short-term result of 3.1 pCi/L looks reassuring, but the same house might read 6 pCi/L in February. If your only test was warm-weather and came back below but near the action level, a long-term detector through the heating season is worth doing.
No urgency. If nothing is driving a deadline, a long-term test simply gives you better information for the same modest cost.
The Sequence the EPA Suggests
General guidance runs roughly like this: start with a short-term test. If the result is 4.0 pCi/L or higher, either follow with a second short-term test or a long-term test — or, if the initial reading is high, move directly to mitigation. If the result is below 4.0, consider a long-term test to understand your annual average, particularly if the short-term test ran in warm weather.
The logic: short-term testing is a fast filter, and long-term testing refines the picture when the fast answer is ambiguous.
The exception is a very high short-term result. If a 48-hour test reads 22 pCi/L, waiting a year to confirm makes no sense. That home needs a mitigation system.
Devices Used for Each
Short-term testing uses continuous radon monitors, which log hourly and are the professional standard, or charcoal canisters, which are inexpensive passive devices mailed to a lab.
Long-term testing typically uses alpha track detectors — small passive devices with plastic film that records particle tracks — or electret ion chambers. Long-term detectors are inexpensive, often in the $20 to $40 range, and require nothing beyond placing them correctly and leaving them alone.
A Reasonable Plan for Onondaga County
Given that this county carries the EPA’s highest-risk Zone 1 designation, here is a sensible approach for a homeowner not in the middle of a transaction.
Run a short-term test first for a quick read. If it comes back at or above 4.0 pCi/L, move toward mitigation rather than extended testing. If it comes back below 4.0 but above roughly 2.0, place a long-term alpha track detector spanning the heating season, since winter is when this region peaks. If it comes back well below 2.0 in winter conditions, you are likely fine — retest every few years and after significant renovations.
If you are buying or selling, none of this applies. Short-term professional testing with documented results is what the transaction requires.

A single radon number is less definitive than it appears. It is a measurement of specific conditions over a specific window. Understanding whether your test captured a typical period, an unusually calm summer stretch, or a January cold snap is what turns a number into actual knowledge about your home.
